The year 2018 is marked by the 90th anniversary of the birth of Zygmunt Wichary – a pianist, an arranger and an indefatigable bandleader from Chorzów, whose band was a guarantee of great entertainment based on strong jazz foundations for several years. On that occasion, the City of Chorzów and GAD Records refresh the memory of this unusual person by means of radio recordings from the 1950s and the 1960s, most of which have never been published before.

Zygmunt Wichary founded his jazz band in 1954 and was its leader until his premature death in the autumn of 1966. During these twelve years, he collaborated with many soloists and dozens of instrumentalists – playing with his band was an opportunity to gain musical and stage experience, e.g., for saxophonist Zbigniew Namysłowski or drummer Ryszard Gromek (Czerwono-Czarni). The music of the band was based on dixieland, but went beyond it – in 1960, Wichary’s band made the first recording of rock’n’roll music (in the form of an EP consisting of four songs) in Poland. It was with Wichary’s band that singer Katarzyna Bovery performed popular Italian songs at the beginning of her career. In subsequent years, Wichary’s artistic output was wrongly marginalised and pushed aside as less ambitious music. The unjustness of this approach is confirmed by “Talizman” – an album containing 23 recordings, most of which were made in the Polish Radio studios in Warsaw in the years 1960-62. Apart from songs performed by Elisabeth Charles, Bogusław Wyrobek (“Diana” in radio version!) and Rena Holm, it contains many instrumental pieces, including band members’ own compositions, and interesting paraphrases of popular tunes. The material is complemented by sensational live recordings from the “Turniej Jazzu” in October 1955, where the first line-up of Wichary’s band accompanied Carmen Moreno and Zbigniew Kurtycz.

All recordings were remastered from original tapes in the archive of the Polish Radio.

W 2018 roku mija 90. rocznica urodzin Zygmunta Wicharego – pochodzącego z Chorzowa pianisty, aranżera i niestrudzonego bandleadera, którego zespół przez kilkanaście lat stanowił gwarancję doskonałej rozrywki, osadzonej mocno na jazzowych podstawach. Z tej okazji Miasto Chorzów wraz z GAD Records przypominają tę niezwykłą postać – z pomocą niepublikowanych w większości nagrań radiowych z przełomu lat 50. i 60. ubiegłego stulecia.

Zygmunt Wichary założył swój jazzowy zespół w 1954 roku i prowadził aż do przedwczesnej śmierci jesienią 1966 roku. W ciągu tych dwunastu lat z Wicharym współpracowało wielu solistów i dziesiątki instrumentalistów – pod jego okiem estradowe szlify doskonalili m.in. Zbigniew Namysłowski czy Ryszard Gromek (Czerwono-Czarni). Muzyka zespołu bazowała na dixielandzie, ale nie ograniczała się do niego – to właśnie zespół Wicharego nagrał wraz z Bogusławem Wyrobkiem pierwsza rock’n’rollową płytę (tzw. czwórkę) w 1960 roku. To z Wicharym zaczynała – od piosenki włoskiej – Katarzyna Bovery. W późniejszych latach dorobek artystyczny Wicharego był marginalizowany i spychany na bok jako muzyka mniej ambitna – dziś wiadomo, że niesłusznie. Potwierdza to „Talizman”, zawierający dwadzieścia trzy nagrania, z których większość zrealizowano w studiach Polskiego Radia w Warszawie w latach 1960–62. Oprócz piosenek wykonywanych przez Elisabeth Charles, Bogusława Wyrobka (radiowa wersja „Diany”!) i Renę Holm znalazło się tu wiele utworów instrumentalnych, w tym autorskie kompozycje członków zespołu i ciekawe parafrazy popularnych melodii. Materiał uzupełniają sensacyjne nagrania z „Turnieju Jazzu” z października 1955 roku, gdzie pierwszemu składowi zespołu Wicharego towarzyszą Carmen Moreno i Zbigniew Kurtycz.

Wszystkie nagrania zostały zremasterowane z oryginalnych taśm z archiwum Polskiego Radia.
